Cat Laryngeal Disease, Symptoms & Diagnose

The larynx also known as the voice box on a cat can often become diseased. The Larynx allows air to go from the outside of the body into the lungs of the cat. It protects the lungs from vomit and also lets the cat’s meows be heard. Any kind of disease is one that constricts the Larynx of doing its job in allowing these things to take place.

Cats usually get it when they are adults and older however it has been seen in younger cats too. Getting cancer in the Larynx usually happens with cats that are middle aged but a specific breed doesn’t matter.

Signs and symptoms:

Some symptoms of cat laryngeal disease depend on the amount of air getting to the voice box or the Larynx this can determine the signs and symptoms of a specific disease. Some of which include the lack of oxygen, high sounding breathing, running a temperature, panting, mood swings, reduction in activity levels, and a lack of wanting to exercise or play.

You’ll have to give a complete history of the cat’s health and activity to a specialist or veterinarian. Also, when the conditions began, and what your cat’s health and behavior was like before the conditions got worse. There will be a lot of questions asked so be prepared to have the best answers possible to be given.

Cat Laryngeal Disease

A lot of tests will be done on your cat. These tests will be done to find any type of disease that could be hiding out right that the doctor can’t see. And to help determine what other types of illnesses that it isn’t. Different diagnosis’ can be ruled out one by one as the tests are done.

Your cat might even get a lot of sedation while going through some of the tests because they require the cat to remain very still and no moving whatsoever. The veterinarian will be looking for air obstructions, large masses, and anything else associated with cancer of the Larynx.

Some of the causes:

Although some cats are born with the disease and others just get the disease, there are different causes that go along with it. Paralysis, nervous system disorders, trauma, abnormalities of muscle, diseases in the chest and many other causes associated with these that are considered minor causes.

Risk factors:

There are some risk factors to be considered such as lung abnormalities for example pneumonia, and other respiratory illnesses. Fluid builds up where the chest and lungs come together and there could be problems with the breathing of the cat as well. For the most part the Larynx plays a big role in the well being of a cat and it should be taken care of.

If you think your cat is having problems you should have it checked out promptly by a caregiver of animals. Cat Larynx cancer is becoming more common and is being diagnosed easier now with better technology today.
